Pendo Survey Illustration
At my day job at SugarCRM, I primarily focus on UX design, but I’m often tapped for quick-turnaround graphics. For example, I received a Slack request at 12:39 PM and delivered a polished, ready-to-ship graphic by 5 PM the same day.
Sketch
Our new CEO asked marketing to survey customers to get a baseline for sentiment. Marketing needed a graphic for the Pendo survey as a way to gain attention. Time was of the essence, so I quickly sketched out a rough idea in Procreate.
"Ink"
My first plan was to do a looser ink look, with color flowing outside of the lines, but in the end I went with the more accurate looking vectors which I created in Adobe Illustrator.
Grayscale
I traced my sketch quickly with the pen tool. For color, I tried a new method I had seen an illustrator extol on Instagram, where she colored her illustrations in grayscale first in order to avoid getting distracted with picking colors. I tried this method, which worked swimmingly allowing me to pick the grayscale values quickly.
Color
Then I found a color palette I liked, adjusted the colors, added a few more, and applied it to the grayscale illustration.
Texture
I love flat color but this time I wanted to add a little more visual interest so I added some vector brush shading, which instantly locked it in.
Final
I exported the final art as a png and sent it to marketing. This survey had a 76% higher completion rate that previous surveys.
